幼い頃から猫たちと関わり、猫の絵を描き続けてきた私に、自信を持って言えることが一つある。猫にはある種の霊力が備わっていて、その力は接し方によって良くも悪くも作用するということだ。 1990年代、洋画輸入会社「葛井エンタープライズ」から招き猫の絵を依頼された。その後、同社が輸入した無名の映画『Shine（シャイン）』はアカデミー賞を受賞し、世界的な大ヒットとなった。葛井社長は今でも「あの招き猫のおかげ」と信じている。真実か否かは神のみぞ知るが、それにしてはボーナスは出なかった（笑）。 私の絵を所有した方々が良い方向へ向かうこと。それが私が作品を描き続ける目的の一つである。

Momo Yama（日本）
上海生まれ、日本育ちのMOMO YAMAは、ファッション、ファインアート、ストリー トアート、エンターテインメントなど、複数のカルチャーを融合させたユニークな作品を発表している。その美意識と人生の哀愁を併せ持つ作風から、アート界では「現代のロートレック」と称される。また、若い世代が憧れるファッションアイコンでもあり、「原宿の伝説」とも呼ばれている。彼の作品に描かれるメランコリックでエレガント、そしてどこかミステリアスな女性たちは、見る者を1920年代のパリ、モロッコ、そして彼女たちが暮らすエーゲ海へと誘う。

Artist’s Comment
Having been surrounded by cats since childhood and continuing to paint them throughout my life, there is one thing I can say with confidence: cats possess a certain spiritual power, and that power can have either a positive or negative influence depending on how we treat them. In the 1990s, I was commissioned by a foreign film distribution company, Kuzui Enterprises, to create a painting of a Maneki-neko (beckoning cat). Later, a relatively unknown film imported by the company, Shine, went on to win an Academy Award and became a worldwide hit. Even today, President Kuzui believes it was “thanks to that Maneki-neko.” Whether that is true or not, only the gods know—but strangely enough, I never received a bonus. One of my purposes in continuing to create art is to bring those who own my paintings toward something better in their lives.

Born in Shanghai and raised in Japan, MOMO YAMA presents a unique set of works that fuse multiple cultures such as fashion, fine art, street art and entertainment. MOMO YAMA is known as the “Modern Lautrec” in the art society because his artistic style is full of aesthetic sensibilities in combination with the melancholy of life. He is also a fashion icon admired by the younger generation and called a “Harajuku legend”. The melancholic, elegant and somewhat mysterious women within his works take viewers on a trip back to Paris in the 1920s, Morocco and the Aegean Sea, where these women live.
