私の実家は、改築に次ぐ改築で壁と壁の間に空間ができ、屋根の隙間で野良猫が出産すると子猫が隙間に滑り落ちてしまう、そんな家でした。数年に一度、壁の向こうからかすかな鳴き声が聞こえてくるたびに、私たちは壁を壊して子猫を救出し、家族として迎えていました。その壁から救い出された最後の猫が「レオ」でした。 8 年前、母親が認知症で介護施設に入ることになり、私の家に引っ越してきた老猫のレオは一昨年、そして子犬の時から共に過ごしたヨーキー（ヨークシャー・テリア）の「グラム」は昨年19 歳で、私の元から旅立っていきました。「2 人とも、幸せに暮らせたのかな」――今でも愛おしい思い出とともに、生きることを全うした２つの命に、深い尊敬の念を抱くことがあります。亡くなる間際、息絶えるその瞬間まであんなに命を燃やして旅立つ姿を見て、私にはそれだけのことができるだろうか、と。彼らを思い出すたびに、私は純粋に生きることを諦めたくないと思うのです。 今回の展示「THE CHARITY #1」に参加させていただくにあたり、犬や猫に関連する作品だけでなく、「奇跡的にこの世界に生まれて生きる、すべての命」に焦点を当てて出品作品を選びました。 展示する5 つの作品のうち、「私たちの食べ物は高いところにある」では社会の狭間に置かれた「命」たちを、「大人が作った小さな世界」と「NOT Outliner girl」シリーズの2 点（※この作品は6 ページの漫画「NOT OUTLINER GIRL」からインスパイアされたものです。ご興味のある方は、漫画を公開している私のInstagram [@imaitoonz ]を覗いてみてください）では、子どもの未来や可能性の大きさと反比例する、大人が作った「小さな世界」に順応せざるを得ない「命」を描きました。 そして、2005 年に行われた企画展「GUNDAMー来るべき未来のためにー」にて制作した「mOnsTeRbALL」では、アニメ『機動戦士ガンダム』をモチーフに、戦争という不条理に翻弄される「命」を表現しています。 この時代に生まれた以上、私たちは人間社会が作り出したさまざまなシステムの狭間 で、その恩恵を享受し、時には翻弄されながら生きていくしかありません。それが社会の仕組みなのかもしれません。しかし、一つひとつの命の価値が、システムや搾取によって不条理に軽く扱われることがあって良いはずはありません。私はその社会の在り方に憤 り、不条理さに哀れみを覚え、弱者だけが犠牲になって悲しみが繰り返される世の中に、狂いそうなほどの痛みを覚えることがあります。 人間であれば、私のように社会と距離を置いたり、作品に思いを込めて表現したりすることができます。しかし、保護猫や保護犬といった弱い立場の命は、システムの狭間で自ら生き方を選ぶことすらできません。自然を拒絶し、否応なしにこの不自然な世界を作り上げてしまった一介の、また一塊の人間として、すべての保護猫や保護犬、そして生きとし生けるものすべての生命に平穏が訪れることを願うばかりです。 今回のチャリティを通じて、小さな命たちが少しでも幸せになれますように。

アーティストについて

今井トゥーンズ（Imaitoonz）（日本）

1971年生まれのアーティスト、イラストレーター。多摩美術大学大学油画科卒業研究科修了後、1995年から活動を開始。「ダイナミックな」構図や「繊細で綿密」な描写を持ち味に、炭酸飲料「C.C.レモン」CF キャラクターデザイン（サントリー/1996）、プロモーションアニメ「PRESTO」（NIKE/ 2000）、「Dr.Pepper」ボトルパッケージイラスト（日本コカコーラ/2007）、劇場版アニメ「DEAD LEAVES」（ProductionI.G/2004）の企画・原作、TVアニメ『天元突破グレンラガン』3Dメカデザイン（GAINAX/2007）など、花村萬月・著『GASHIN!～我・神～』（集英社）の挿絵・装画、ビブレ／フォーラスの広告イラストといった広告ビジュアルをはじめ、CDジャケットイラスト、キャラクターデザイン、漫画など幅広く手掛ける。近年は、個人的な作品制作にも力を入れており、国内外で作品を発表、活動は多岐に渡る。

Artist’s Comment

My family home had been renovated and remodeled so many times that spaces had formed between the walls. Whenever a stray cat gave birth in the gaps beneath the roof, the kittens would sometimes slip into these spaces. Every few years, whenever we heard faint cries coming from behind the walls, we would break through the wall to rescue the kittens and welcome them into our family. The last cat we rescued from behind those walls was Leo. Eight years ago, my mother developed dementia and moved into a care facility, so Leo, who was already an elderly cat at the time, came to live with me. He passed away the year before last. Last year, Gram, my Yorkshire Terrier, whom I had lived with since she was a puppy, passed away at the age of 19. “Did the two of them live happy lives?” Even now, alongside the many precious memories they left me, I sometimes feel a deep sense of respect for these two lives that lived their lives to the fullest. Seeing them burn with such intensity until their very last breath made me wonder, “Would I be able to live with that same strength?” Whenever I think of them, I am reminded that I never want to give up on simply living—living purely and wholeheartedly. For my participation in “THE CHARITY #1,” I selected works that focus not only on dogs and cats, but on “all forms of life that are miraculously born into and live in this world.” Among the five works presented, Our Food Is High Up depicts the “lives” placed in the margins of society. A Small World Made by Adults and two works from the NOT Outliner Girl series depict lives that are forced to adapt to the “small world” created by adults—a world that stands in stark contrast to the vastness of children’s futures and possibilities. In mOnsTeRbALL, which I created for the 2005 exhibition GUNDAM—For the Future That Is to Come—, I used the anime Mobile Suit Gundam as a motif to express the lives caught up in the absurdity of war. Simply by being born into this era, we have no choice but to live within the countless systems created by human society—sometimes benefiting from them, and at other times being swept along by them. Perhaps this is simply how society works. But there is no reason why the value of each individual life should ever be treated as insignificant or disposable because of systems or exploitation. I feel anger toward the way society functions, sorrow at its absurdities, and at times an almost unbearable pain when I see a world in which only the vulnerable are sacrificed and the same cycle of suffering continues. As human beings, we can choose to distance ourselves from society, as I have, or express our thoughts and feelings through our work. But vulnerable lives, such as rescued cats and dogs, cannot even choose how they want to live within the systems that surround them. As one ordinary human being—one among the many who have rejected nature and, willingly or unwillingly, helped create this unnatural world—I can only hope that peace will come to all rescued cats and dogs, and to every living being in this world. Through this charity exhibition, I sincerely hope that these small and precious lives can find even a little more happiness.

About the Artist

Imaitoonz (Japan)

Born in Japan in 1971, IMAITOONZ is an artist and illustrator. After completing both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Oil Painting at Tama Art University, IMAITOONZ began a professional career in 1995. Known for dynamic compositions and meticulously detailed imagery, the artist has worked across a wide range of creative fields, including illustration, animation, character design, manga, advertising, and publishing. Major commercial projects include the character design for Suntory's C.C. Lemon television commercial (1996), the promotional animation PRESTO for Nike (2000), the bottle package illustration for Dr Pepper (Japan Coca-Cola, 2007), the original concept and story for the animated feature film DEAD LEAVES (Production I.G, 2004), and 3D mechanical design for the television anime Gurren Lagann (GAINAX, 2007). IMAITOONZ has also produced book illustrations and cover artwork for GASHIN! by Mangetsu Hanamura (Shueisha), advertising visuals for VIVRE and FORUS, as well as numerous CD jacket illustrations and character designs. In recent years, the artist has increasingly focused on developing a personal artistic practice, exhibiting works both in Japan and internationally.
