One-of-a-kind work.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eArtist’s Comment\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis series was created during a period when I had taken a leave of absence from my doctoral studies. The experience that inspired the series came from a trip I made to London at the time. After returning to Japan, I wanted to give form to the people I had passed on the streets of London—people whose features had already begun to blur in my memory.\n\nWhen we are in an unfamiliar city, we pass countless people every day. Yet once they disappear from our field of vision, we can rarely recall them in their entirety. The details of their faces gradually fade away, leaving behind only fragments in our memories—a certain silhouette, a gesture, a hairstyle, or some other indistinct impression.\n\nI sought to give a tangible form to this state of memory that exists somewhere between “presence” and “forgetting.” The faces of the figures are compressed into flat surfaces, as though their details have been erased by the passage of time. In contrast, a sense of three-dimensionality remains in their hair, which slowly sways back and forth like a pendulum. This movement suggests the way memories continue to shift and be reconstructed, gradually drifting further from their original form as time passes.\n\nIn reality, these figures have no specific identities or individual histories. They are simply people I happened to encounter and pass on the streets. Even the features depicted in the works may have been filled in later by my own imagination.\n\nAt the same time, however, I believe these figures may also exist within the viewer’s own memories—as strangers who once appeared before them for only a fleeting moment, but whose faces they can no longer fully remember.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eAbout the Artist\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWeng Suman\u003c\/strong\u003e (China)\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWeng’s work is based on rustic woodcarvings. She enjoys incorporating humor into her sculptures and using metal materials like hinges to create movable parts that open and close unexpectedly. Weng’s artistic expression stems from a deep desire for communication— Weng hopes viewers will engage directly with her work rather than simply observing it from a distance. Growing up in a rural area of China, Weng was strongly influenced by the ancestral worship statues in her hometown.
